The story

It started as an internal purchasing problem

DevSpark Ltd builds and debugs hardware for clients — prototype boards, small production runs, and the unglamorous repair work that keeps equipment alive. That work runs on consumables: tips, braid, flux, tweezers, mats, straps.

Sourcing them in the UK turned out to be genuinely irritating. Marketplace listings changed specification between orders. "ESD-safe" mats arrived with no measurable dissipative layer. Wrist straps shipped without the 1 MΩ safety resistor that makes them safe to wear near mains-referenced equipment. Anything decent had a six-week lead time from overseas.

So the team started buying samples, testing them properly, and keeping a short internal list of what actually worked. SMD Traders is that list, opened to everyone else.

How a product earns its listing

We are deliberately not a catalogue business. A narrow range we can stand behind is more useful to a repair bench than ten thousand SKUs nobody has handled. Every line goes through the same three steps.

1. Source and vet

We shortlist suppliers, request samples, and reject anything with unclear provenance or specifications that shift between production batches. Where a product claims a standard, we ask for the documentation behind it.

2. Sample-test on a real bench

Samples go onto a working bench, not a photo studio. Soldering stations are checked for thermal recovery under load and tip fit. ESD products are checked for surface resistance and correct resistor values. Hand tools get used on fine-pitch work until something either holds up or does not.

3. Stock in the UK

What passes gets a UK stock holding in Manchester and a published specification — so what you read on the product page is what arrives in the box. What fails does not get listed, however good the margin looked.
